Obverse: Portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to the right (i.e. the third type), at the bottom the year of issue. Circular lettering: NEW ZEALAND ELIZABETH II.
Reverse: kiwi Bird; a semicircle at the bottom the face value: ONE DOLLAR.
Kiwi (lat. Apteryx) is the only genus of ratites birds in the same family (Apterygidae) and the unit cilibrasi or wingless (Apterygiformes). Includes five species endemic to New Zealand.
All kinds of kiwi have a strong four-toed feet and a long, narrow beak with nostrils at the tip. The wings are not developed, the tail is absent. Kiwi feathers are more like thick fur. The appearance and habits of the kiwi is so different from other birds, the zoologist William Calder (eng. William A. Calder III) called them "honorary mammal".
