Obverse: King Birendra bir Bikram in Nepal the crown of feathers bird of Paradise. The temple of Vajrayogini in Sankhu near Kathmandu. Vintage Nepalese coin. Frieze (stone carving) with female deity on it. With the caption: Satyendra Pyara Shrestha (1995-2000).

Birendra (28 December 1945 — 1 June 2001), the tenth king of Nepal from 1972 to 2001 from the dynasty of the Shah. Marshal of the Royal Nepalese army (31 January 1972).

Sankhu is an ancient town located on the northeastern outskirts of the Kathmandu valley. This is a sacred place associated with Vajrayogini, as Buddhists and Hindus. It is one of the oldest, its history dates back to the 5th century BC and here was the imprint of those times when the teachings of Sutra and Tantra spread from India to Tibet. This place is also known as "Eighty of Mahasiddhas".On the hill above Sankhu is one of the sacred temples, Vajrayogini, very ancient, one of the first Buddhist templu.

The coat of arms that was in use before 30 December 2006, present an image of a white cow, a green pheasant (Himalayan monal), the sun and the moon, two Gurkha soldiers (one of them in his belt a curved knife (kukri) and bow in hand, and the other a rifle), peaks of the Himalayas, two crossed Nepalese flags and kukri, traces of Gorakana (the guardian deity of the Gurkhas) and the Royal headdress. It is a variant of the coat of arms also contains a red scroll with the national motto.
