The police of Malta (Mal. Il-Pulizija ta’ Malta) is one of the oldest bodies of law in Europe. The first police unit on the island it was formed on 12 July 1814 the first British Governor Thomas Maitland (Thomas Maitland, led the island for 1813-1824.). He wanted to maintain law and order on the territory entrusted to him.
