The twelve apostles (gr. απόστολος — "Ambassador, messenger") — the closest disciples of Jesus Christ (not to be confused with the apostles of the seventy).
According to the gospel narrative (Matt. 10:1-4, MK. 3:14-19, LK. 6:13-16), during His earthly life, Jesus Christ chose 12 closest disciples that are called twelve apostles. Information about the lives of the apostles known from the Gospels and the Acts of the apostles (Acts), which are included in the new Testament, and also from sacred Tradition.
