ANZAC day (eng. Anzac Day) — national holiday of Australia and New Zealand.
On 25 April 1915 during the First world war, the Entente forces (the British, Australians, new Zealanders, Newfoundlands, Indians, French) began landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula (Turkey). In the ensuing protracted and bloody battles the Marines failed to develop the offensive with the captured bridgeheads and at the end of the year, was evacuated. During this unsuccessful operation, called the Dardanelles, particularly distinguished the troops of Australia and new Zealand army corps (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, ANZAC).
